Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a computer assisted training modality where a client can be shown indicators or brain activity through a monitor and/or speakers.  Once aware of these functions, the idea is that clients can then make changes to their brain states.  This is a significant body of evidence indicating that neurofeedback can help with a variety of mental health concerns including, but not limited to, ADHD, ADD, anxiety, depression, migraines, and substance abuse.

The advantage of neurofeedback is primarily that is it not a medication based intervention.  Nothing is “done” to the client.  The neurofeedback equipment only reads what brain states are being produced by the client, so that the client becomes more aware.  Side effects are rarely seen, and when seen they are typically short in duration.  Positive results are generally long term because they are self-rewarding.  Of course, no one intervention is right for everyone so I make no assertion that neurofeedback will work for you.  However, I have seen clients make significant gains, particularly with ADD, ADHD and the ability to relax.

Despite being around for decades, neurofeedback is rarely covered by health insurance.  For this reason, I only accept private pay for neurofeedback sessions and do not get involved in the insurance reimbursement process where neurofeedback training is concerned.
